As in many cities, the arrival of the railway in the 19th century brought a new boom to the town. This economic growth was underpinned by new architectural styles, often eclectic in influence, built using mass-produced materials. Businesses, particularly wine-related, continued to expand, and new housing and facilities such as theatres, schools and administrative offices were built.
